Cylinder Centre Piece

Designed as an integral part of the construction of a luxury six-bedroom converted farmhouse in Telford, this bespoke marine aquarium was conceived as both an architectural feature and a living ecosystem. Positioned between the kitchen, dining, and lounge areas, the installation creates an open visual transition between spaces whilst establishing a striking focal point at the heart of the home.

The aquarium measures 2 metres in diameter and 2 metres in height, providing uninterrupted 360-degree views into a vibrant tropical marine environment. Custom joinery was designed to match the surrounding kitchen furniture, allowing the aquarium to integrate seamlessly into the wider interior whilst maintaining the clean lines and material palette of the home.

At the centre of the display, a dramatic reef structure rises through the water column, creating depth, scale, and habitat for a diverse collection of marine fish. The cylindrical form allows the aquarium to be experienced from every angle, ensuring it remains visually connected to daily life throughout the surrounding living spaces.

The display forms part of a larger 10,000-litre aquatic system supported by a purpose-built life support facility located within a dedicated annex on the west wing of the property. Connected via underground pipework, the system incorporates extensive filtration, water storage, and environmental management infrastructure more commonly associated with commercial and public aquarium installations.

Constructed as part of the original build programme, the project demonstrates how large-scale aquatic environments can be successfully integrated into residential architecture, combining advanced engineering, bespoke craftsmanship, and living ecosystems to create a unique connection with nature within the home.
