Sexy Reef

Located within Sexy Fish Manchester, this large-scale marine aquarium was designed as a central feature of the dining experience, creating an immersive connection between hospitality, design, and the natural world.

Measuring 6 metres in length, 1.7 metres in height, and 1 metre in depth, the aquarium provided guests with uninterrupted views into a vibrant tropical reef environment housing more than one hundred marine fish alongside a diverse collection of corals, crustaceans, and invertebrates. The constantly evolving ecosystem introduced movement, colour, and natural behaviours into the restaurant, becoming an integral part of the wider guest experience.

At the heart of the installation was a 10,000-litre display aquarium forming part of a larger 15,000-litre aquatic system. Supported by a dedicated plant room and advanced life support infrastructure located on the floor below, the project utilised technologies more commonly associated with public aquariums, including a dedicated quarantine facility, mangrove and macroalgae refugium, custom lighting, advanced filtration, and comprehensive environmental monitoring.

Maintained three times each week, including weekly dive inspections, the system operated a highly structured husbandry programme designed to support long-term animal health and environmental stability. Livestock received a varied diet consisting of automated hourly feeds of dried foods, vitamin-enriched frozen preparations, and a range of plankton cultures dosed automatically throughout the day to replicate natural feeding opportunities.
