Library Aquarium

Designed in collaboration with LK Interiors, this bespoke freshwater aquarium was integrated between the library and kitchen of a luxury family home in Essex. The brief was to create a visually striking yet low-maintenance living feature that could be enjoyed from multiple rooms whilst remaining practical for a busy family lifestyle that often involved extended periods away from home.

Positioned as a natural divider between the two spaces, the aquarium was designed to create a seamless visual connection whilst introducing movement, texture, and a continual connection with nature into the heart of the home. Two large pieces of sculptural driftwood formed the centrepiece of the aquascape, creating a dramatic natural composition that provided both structure and scale within the display.

A large shoal of Platinum Tetra was selected to contrast against the darker hardscape and introduce a sense of movement, elegance, and sophistication to the installation. Their reflective silver coloration created a dynamic visual effect as they moved collectively through the aquarium, becoming a focal point when viewed from both the library and kitchen.

Behind the scenes, the aquarium incorporated advanced automation and life support technology to minimise maintenance whilst maximising reliability. A dedicated sump system housed the filtration infrastructure and was connected directly to the property's water supply and drainage network, enabling automated water changes and reducing routine maintenance requirements. Lighting, environmental monitoring, and system control were managed through an integrated aquarium controller, allowing the ecosystem to remain stable and largely self-sufficient during periods when the homeowners were travelling.

This project demonstrates how thoughtfully designed freshwater aquariums can be integrated into residential interiors, combining natural aesthetics, advanced automation, and long-term practicality to create living environments that enrich everyday life.
